The real cost wasn't bad design.
It was the time spent trying to do it all.

Client: Marshall Fire

Project: Corporate brochure, Competence statement, Teams CVs, Internal processes documents, Presentation templates

THE SITUATION

Like many marketing managers in SMEs, Vicky wore a lot of hats.

Vicky is Head of Marketing at Marshall Fire, a fire safety engineering consultancy.

As a growing business, there was always another proposal, presentation, exhibition or marketing asset needing attention.

She didn't have a designer on her team.

We first got chatting as mums on the school run. Design questions would pop up here and there, and I'd offer advice and suggestions. Over time those informal conversations evolved into a working relationship, as it became clear that having access to specialist design support could make a real difference.

THE REALITY

"Just because you can do it yourself doesn't mean you should."

Like many marketers, Vicky was capable of creating marketing materials when she needed to. The problem wasn't whether she could do it. The problem was whether she should be spending her time doing it.

Without an in-house designer, visual projects naturally landed on her desk. Brochures, presentations, exhibition materials and marketing assets all needed creating, alongside the rest of her role.

While she could pull something together, she was rarely fully satisfied with the outcome and it often took valuable time away from the strategic work she was hired to do.

At the same time, Marshall Fire was growing and needed its marketing materials to feel more consistent and professional. The business had the expertise. The challenge was communicating that expertise clearly and consistently across every touchpoint.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The best creative partnerships don't need lengthy briefings.

Because I've worked with Marshall Fire for a number of years, I understand the business, the audience and the visual style they're trying to achieve.

Today, projects often begin with a simple email brief. I know the questions to ask, understand what's needed and can often get started immediately without lengthy meetings or complex processes.

That's one of the biggest advantages of a long-term creative partnership. Instead of repeatedly explaining your business to different suppliers, you work with someone who already understands the bigger picture and can take ownership of the creative side of a project.

THE TURNING POINT

The confidence came from knowing the job was in safe hands.

For Vicky, the biggest shift wasn't just the quality of the finished materials. It was knowing she no longer had to figure everything out herself.

Instead of spending hours wrestling with layouts, paralysed with design decisions or visual consistency, she could focus on marketing strategy, confident that the creative side would be handled professionally.

That trust meant projects moved faster, decisions became easier and valuable time was freed up for the work only she could do.

THE OUTCOME

The biggest result wasn't the logo. It was the confidence that came with it.

Over the years, we've worked together on a wide range of marketing and business materials, helping Marshall Fire present itself in a clear, professional and consistent way.

"We've found Fran collaborative, creative and quick, understanding what was required straight away."

And perhaps the strongest endorsement came from her feedback on the work itself:

"Fran's incredibly quick understanding of the look and feel we wanted has led to the creation of materials that we couldn't have envisaged. Her understanding of what was required, with minimal briefing, has made it a joy to work together."

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Why your marketing manager shouldn't be your designer.

If you're spending valuable time creating presentations, proposals or marketing materials because there's nobody else to do them, you might be facing the same challenge.

Not because you're incapable. But because your time is better spent elsewhere.

Having a trusted designer who understands your business means less time explaining, less time tweaking and more time focusing on the work that moves your business forward.
